Deep Tissue Massage

Deep Tissue Massage is a type of massage therapy which focuses on applying deeper pressure (compared to Swedish massage) with slow, sustained strokes to reach the deeper tissues and fascia. Concentrating on areas of tension or discomfort, Deep Tissue Massage is particularly beneficial for chronic aches, pains, muscle and sports related injuries or contracted areas such as stiff neck, tight leg or shoulder tissues.

Benefits of Deep Tissue Massage

Deep Tissue massage offers both physical and psychological benefits. Unlike other massage techniques which focus on relaxation, deep tissue massaging focuses on specific areas of stress or tightness, nevertheless it can still help you unwind mentally too.

It is reported that Deep Tissue can assist with:

  • Chronic pain
  • Lower back pain
  • Recovery from injuries
  • Repetitive strain injuries such as Carpal Tunnel
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Muscle tension or spasm

How fast will I get results?

It is important to be realistic about what one or multiple Deep Tissue massage sessions can achieve.

Many think more pressure, more pain will help them achieve their goals faster – however this just isn’t the case.

More pain does not result in more gain. New research demonstrates that by creating more pain we are only creating an analgesic (numbing) effect in the particular area, which allows for temporary relaxation rather than a mechanical change in the structures of the tissues. Additionally, there tends to be little consideration of the reason for the tension in the first place, hence why you may get tension, pain or discomfort reoccurring again in the same place within a few hours or days.

While all forms of massage are great, long-standing techniques and will long remain as such, massage alone will not address why that particular area of pain, tension or discomfort has arose.

It is the ‘why’ which needs to be identified and managed as part of an integrated programme which includes specific exercises to help you to work on your own particular ways and patterns of moving and relaxing, alongside overall body maintenance.

Sports Massage

Therapeutic Sports Massage is angled towards athletes of all kinds, from Elite and Olympic representatives through to weekend joggers and recreational weight lifters. Sports massage has become an integral part of the athletic community.

Each sport and activity uses the body and muscle groups in different ways. Trained Sport Massage Therapists must be familiar with each muscle, the muscle groups and how they are influenced by specific sporting movements, associated stresses and overuse. Frequently supplementing Sports Massage with other massage therapy approaches, such as Deep Tissue, Trigger Point, Acupressure and Cross-Fiber, will ultimately improve the tissues’ capacity to relax, improve tissue tone, flexibility and blood flow, and reduce fatigue.

Benefits of Sports Massage

Adequate recovery from sport is a major factor in avoiding over-training syndrome and associated injuries.  Sports Massage helps the body to recover from the stress and minor damage encountered as part of the exercise process, facilitating the ‘rebuild’ phase of conditioning.

The physiological benefits include:

  • Improved blood and lymph circulation
  • Muscle relaxation
  • General relaxation
  • Shortened recovery periods between work outs
  • Improvement in muscle elasticity, resulting in improved power and performance

In all cases, massage techniques should be employed in collaboration with an integrated conditioning programme. This ensures the body has sufficient balance, control and ability when engaging multiple pathways in order to create the same movement pattern required for specific sporting activities and to manage and minimise the strenuous over-usage of muscle groups.

Restore Prehabilitation & Recovery® has the systems, experience and educational material, all in one location, to ensure your conditioning programme is equally balanced to support your physical activities, sporting or otherwise, allowing you to improve performance and minimise injury risk.
